Congratulations on Purchasing your new theme!
First of all, unzip the file you downloaded to your computer, all of your theme files are inside.
Before you get started with the install, here are a few things to note.
You will need photoshop to edit the blog header and it should be saved as a PNG file. You will also need to download and install the fonts provided in the theme installation folder. If you do not have photoshop, click here to contact me, leave a message with your email and your blog title and tagline.
For your homepage and categories to show up correctly, it’s important that you set a featured image on each and every post.
Now, On to the fun stuff! Click on each step below to install your new wordpress theme.
Install your WordPress Theme
Log into your wordpress dashboard, click on appearance > Themes.
At the top of the page, click on “Add New”
Then click on “Upload Theme”
In the box that opens up, click on “Choose File” and upload the theme Zip file from your theme folder.
Activate it, then at the top of your screen you will see plugins that are recommended for you to install, click “Begin Installing Plugins”.
Check all the boxes, then “Install” and Apply.
Click on “Return to the required plugins installer”, then check all the boxes again, select “Activate” and “Apply”.
Upload your blog header
Once you have edited your blog header or received the email I sent, the next step is to upload the file. In your admin panel, click Appearance > Customize.
On the page that opens up Click “Site Identity” on the left hand side.
Click “Select Logo”, then select the “Upload Files tab”, Upload your logo, select it then hit the “select button” at the bottom right corner, on the next page choose “Skip Cropping” and your logo will now be inserted! Hit “Save and Publish” on the top left hand corner to save your current settings. Click the “X” Button to go back to your wordpress admin or click the < button at the top left of the page to go back to the customize section.
Set up your Post Layout
Next you will set up how you want your posts to be displayed, there are quite a few options for you to choose from! In the customize area, click “Layout Settings”.
In the section that opens up you will see lots of options, we will start with the homepage layout section. All you need to do is click on a section, then your theme will refresh to show you how the layout will look, play around with each section until you find one you want to use. Here is some info about each section that I numbered to explain it a little better.
- All posts are large with a right sidebar and “Read More” Button.
- All posts are large with a left sidebar and “Read More” Button.
- One Large post up top with a read more button, right sidebar and the rest of your posts will have a “List Style” layout.
- One Large post up top with a read more button, left sidebar and the rest of your posts will have a “List Style” layout.
- One Large post up top with a grid layout (two posts side by side) and a right sidebar.
- One Large post up top with a grid layout (two posts side by side) and a left sidebar.
- Masonry layout with Left Sidebar (Think Pinterest).
- Masonry layout with Right Sidebar (Think Pinterest).
- Full width page with no sidebar and Masonry Layout
- Full width page with no sidebar and Grid Layout
Once you have chose a layout you like, you can do the same for your category archive pages then hit “Save and Close.” or the < button to go back to the customize section.
Slider and Featured Posts Section
Slider Set Up
The slider and featured posts section is optional, these will display on your homepage. To set them up go to Appearance > Customize > Featured Section.
To set up your large slider, click on “Main Featured Section” and see the screenshow below for reference, all you need to do is turn it to “on”, then choose the posts you would like to feature by clicking in the “Featured Section Category” box and selecting them. You can also play around with the other features change how many post you want show.
Once you are done, Hit “Save and Close” or back out to the last featured section page to set up your 3 featured posts below the slider.
Click on “Featured Posts” (just under the main featured section).
When the section opens up, turn the setting to “On”, then click inside the white box to select which posts you want to feature. Once you are done, hit “Save and Close!”.
Set up your Navigation Menus
First of all, you will need to have your pages and categories created, if you don’t already have these created, click the links below for a tutorial on adding pages and categories.
Now that your pages and categories have been created, go to Appearance > Menus.
On the page that opens up click on “Create New Menu”
Name your menu whatever you like, then hit the Create Menu button. If your theme has two navigation menu sections (above and below the header), create two menus.
Click Here and watch this video, it will show you an example how to move your pages and categories into each menu and assign them.
The first part of the video shows you how to create your menus and assign them both to each section, the second part shows you how to arrange your pages and categories to have multiple dropdown sections. Open the video in full screen to see it better.
Set up your Social Profiles
Throughout the theme you will add social media icons, but the first step is to set up your social profiles and where each icon will link.
Click Appearance > Customize > Social Profiles
For each icon you wish to use, add the full URL to your page such as http://www.twitter.com/tinselpop etc.
When you are done, hit “Save and Close”.
Add your Social Icons
Make sure you have set up all your social icons, now we are going to add them! To add your social icons to the navigation menu go to Appearance > Customize > Header.
Scroll down until you see “Header Social links” and make sure it’s switched to “Show” then select the little eye next to the social icons that you would like to show, then hit ” Save and Close”.
Footer Menu Social Icons
To turn these on go to Apperance > Customize > Footer. Scroll down and make sure Footer social links is set to “Show” then select the little eye next to the social icons that you would like to show. Hit Save and Close.
Set Up your Footer Logo and Copyright Text
Navigate to Appearance > Customize > Footer. Switch your footer logo to “On” then upload your footer image that was edited in photoshop and saved as a PNG file.
Next, scroll down to the bottom and look for the section that says “Copyright Text”, change that text to display whatever you like! Hit Save and Close.
Install your widgets
Adding widgets to wordpress is easy, it’s basically drag and drop, if you are not familiar with add widgets, watch this video, it shows an example, the widgets are on the left hand side and the sections are on the right hand side.
Before you add widgets, install the plugins located in the plugins folder in the theme that you downloaded. Watch this video, it will show you how to install wordpress plugins and activate them if you are unfamiliar.
Once your plugins are installed follow the instructions below for each plugin.
Social Media Icons
Click on Appearance > Widgets like the video showed you above, find the widget called Simple Social Icons and drag it to the section named “Nav Social Menu” if you have a theme that has icons in the navigation menu. If your theme has icons on the sidebar instead, place the widget in the Primary Sidebar Area.
In your theme folder, you will find a PDF file with the social settings information for your theme, it will give you the color codes and icon sizes needed for your icons. You need to add this information into the box that shows up and makes sure it’s exactly the same.
Once you have your colors and icon sizes set up, scroll down a bit and add the links to your social media sites into the spaces provided.
Make sure to add http:// before any social media URL like the example above and make sure to add mailto: before your email address with no space like the example shown above.
Once you have everything added and set up, hit “SAVE” at the bottom of the widget.
If you would like your icons in the sidebar instead or as well as in the nav menu, do the same as above but drag the widget or another simple social icons widget to the primary sidebar area.
Adding a Welcome Image
Locate the plugin named “Image Widget” in your plugins folder and upload it. Navigate to appearance > widgets
Drag the widget titled “Image Widget” over to the “Primary Sidebar Area” and set it up like below, then hit “Save”.
Add an instagram widget to the bottom of your blog
Upload the plugin, “Enjoy Instagram” from your theme plugins folder.
Then click on “Settings > Enjoy Instagram”
On the page that opens up, click on “Connect your account”
This will connect your instagram account.
Next click on “Appearance > widgets” then drag the widget titled “Enjoy Instagram – Grid” into the Instagram Feed widget section.
Make sure your settings look exactly like above and hit save! (Note: set your instagram to public, if it’s private images won’t show up.)
Instagram widget on Sidebar
Click on Appearance > Widgets and drag “Enjoy Instagram – Grid” into the primary sidebar area. Set it up like the screenshot below.
Social Share buttons at bottom of posts
Upload the plugin named “Genesis Simple Share” and activate it. Next, navigate to Genesis > Simple Share
In the page that opens up, make sure the settings look exactly like they are shown below, then hit “Save”.
Pinterest, Facebook, Tweets and Videos are all preinstalled, they are in the widget area, just drag them into the primary sidebar area, enter your information and Hit save!
There are lots of different things you can do with this theme like add related posts, turn off the cateogry listing, turn of the date and much more, I recommend exploring the customize section once you familiarize yourself with the theme!
